Hit and Run Accident Attorneys

Important Car, Pedestrian, and Motorcycle Hit and Run Accident Information

A hit and run car accident usually means that a driver has left the scene after being involved in an auto accident. It is against the law to leave the scene of an accident. Hit and run drivers not only face big fines and the loss of their driver’s licenses, but jail time as well!

Drivers flee the scene of an accident for many reasons. Sometimes they are drunk. Sometimes they do not realize the severity of the accident they have just caused. Other times they are just scared. In some cases the driver of a hit and run will return to the scene after calming down or realizing what he/she has done.

Hit and run accidents also pertain to people on foot, on a motorcycle, or riding a bicycle. A lot of hit and runs in these situations occur without the responsible driver even knowing they have caused an accident. People and bikes are not as big and as destructive as other cars. You could get backed into in a parking lot, struck crossing the street, or even while jogging.

The website DeadlyRoads.com reports that on average, 4 people die everyday in the United States because of hit and run drivers and that for every one killed, 72 are injured.

What to Consider if you are the Victim of a Hit and Run Accident in Denver or Colorado Springs:

- If you are the victim of a hit in run, first you need to determine if you need medical attention. Your first concern should be for your health and safety. If you believe you are injured, call 911 immediately!

- Look for a license plate number and get a vehicle description, including what the driver looked like and which direction he/she left in.

- Look around for witnesses. See if there is anybody on the scene who saw the hit and run and can make a statement to the police about the circumstances.

- Call the police and report the hit and run and request they come to the scene and make a thorough hit and run police report.

- Look around for nearby surveillance cameras. Parking lots and gas stations usually have them as well as municipal buildings. The surveillance tapes could help identify who hit you and in what direction they left.

- Consider reaching out to the media. From time to time, the media will report on local hit and run accidents. This is a good way for a lot of potential witness to see your story and possibly come forward with information.

- Request a copy of all of your current insurance policies.

- Seek out the council of an experienced hit and run attorney. You may be able to not only recover damages from the person who hit you, but also from your own insurance company.
