An outbreak of hepatitis C has been linked to surgical technician Kristen Parker. Kristen Parker has hepatitis C. She was employed by both Rose Medical Center in Denver and Audubon Surgery Center in Colorado Springs. She confessed in late June to injecting herself with Fentanyl that had been prescribed to surgery patients. To cover up her theft of the powerful narcotic, she refilled her used syringes with saline solution and then injected patients. Any patient of Rose Medical Center or Audubon Surgery Center who received an injection from Kristen Diane Parker could be at risk for contracting hepatitis C.

Rose Medical Center has issued a health notice to screen 4,700 surgical patients for possible exposure. Audubon Surgery Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado hired Kristen Parker after she was fired from Rose Medical Center under suspicion of stealing narcotics. Audubon Surgery Center is also sending out notices to patients who may have been exposed to hepatitis C while Kristen Diane Parker worked at the center.

According to the Rose Medical Center website, Rose is offering “free, confidential and individual testing to everyone who had surgery at Rose Medical Center or at the outpatient surgery department in the Wolf Building at Rose between October 21, 2008 and April 13, 2009.”

If you fear you may have been exposed to hepatitis C at either Rose Medical Center or Audubon Surgery Center in Colorado Springs, it is important that you be screened immediately. As of July 7, 2009 ten people have tested positive for hepatitis C from Rose Medical Center.

If you have been exposed to or contracted hepatitis C from either Rose Medical Center or Audubon Surgery Center, you may be entitled to compensation. According to Colorado law, non-economic and pain and suffering damages in medical malpractice cases can reach $300,000.00.  The state allows for a total of $1 million dollars in damages from medical malpractice cases. In some cases a judge can award more.

There are procedures in place to protect patients from hepatitis exposure and to protect the integrity of the drugs that patients are injected with. There are also background checks that hospital workers must complete to be eligible for hospital employment. If these procedures are not followed or not monitored, the circumstances appropriate for a medical malpractice lawsuit may exist.

Our medical malpractice attorneys are available to speak to you about a possible lawsuit related to Rose Medical Center, Audubon Surgery Center, and a hepatitis c infection. The consequences of an infection range from no symptoms to liver cancer and even death.

Understanding hepatitis C:

Hepatitis C is a contagious disease of the liver. It is literally an inflammation of the liver. Other than sharing a needle with someone who has the disease, it can result from toxins, certain drugs, some diseases, heavy alcohol use, and bacterial or viral infections. Other common types of hepatitis are hepatitis A and hepatitis B.

According to the CDC, the health effects of hepatitis C “can range in severity from a mild illness lasting a few weeks to a serious, lifelong illness…Most people become infected with the hepatitis C virus by sharing needles or other equipment to inject drugs.”

The CDC also warns that “there is no vaccine for hepatitis C. The best way to prevent hepatitis C is by avoiding behaviors that can spread the disease, especially injection drug use.”
